I'll be retaking (for the first time) my O Level English exam which will commence in a few months time. I reflected back on my O Level English result. I made a silly mistake by lifting all my comprehension answers from the passage per se. I'll try my best to use my own words (if need be) next time.
Any tips? Please don't give me vague answers like reading books.
Also how to speed read comprehension passages?
not necessarily have to do that. depend on the question. sometimes have to use logic. sometimes have to make inferences, but i sometimes can't.
Practice by coming here often.
Surf through the posts and make your contributions the best you can.
From the attacks, insults, and humiliations and the very rare you can hone your skill at comprehending what you read and how you answer.
Ignore the insults, the bad English, and do the best you can.
Other than that the best advice I can give you is to read more, write more.
Thanks. That's very comforting. :)

I did my o levels back in 2008.
I don't know about now, but back in 2008, o level comprehensions questions comprises of 3 types of question. They are Literal, Inferential, and Evaluative.
Literal questions are questions that test whether you read the passage or not.
Sample Paragraph:
Car drivers who break the law will face a $30 fixed penalty charge but will not get points on their licence. Lorry or bus drivers will face fines of up to $2500 for the same offence.
Sample Question:
What difference in terms of punishment will car drivers, lorry drivers, and bus drivers face if they are caught using a hand-held phone while driving?
Sample Answer:
Car drivers will be fined $30 while lorry drivers will be fined a maximum of $2500.
Use your own words.
Oh! one more thing I forgot to mention.
At exams you must write swiftly and correctly at the first instance, because of the limited time.
Here you can write, reflect, edit, and edit and edit till you are satisfied.
The secret to good writing is editing. All famous writers practice that.
Practice now, to be ready for the exams.

I am a Tutor, coaching Maths and English.
I am NOT selling my service here. Just want to give my 2 cents worth.
You need to read widely so that you can identify and use the different styles. (But you already banned this advice)
Get a Good Tutor to guide you towards Passing the Exam. (You may be too shy to do this, or you want to economise)
Then the least you can do is to go Popular Bookstore and get at least 2 or 3 Guide Books. And practice on them deligently.
End of 2 cents message.

First and foremost, you need a clear mind to read, understand and answer the questions in the comprehension passage. Keep calm and do not be nervous.
You need to have certain level of vocabulary knowledge to tackle some questions. If you do not know the meaning of the vocab used in the passage you won't be able to answer the question.
Last of all, I wish you good luck in your English Comprehension Exams. Though it is tough for some to pass Comprehension but it is not unattainable.
