Yo ChemGuide, as mentioned previously, it'll be up to you to keep this thread alive by posting updates here, whenever you have new tips to share with students. The server auto-locks threads which expire due to inactivity.

Also, to avoid 'griefers' from intruding into your thread, you might wish to lock it (a Mod power), and unlock it (temporarily) only when you wish to update it. Alternatively, you may leave this thread unlocked, for students to post questions here directed at you.

Lastly, I'll refrain from posting in your thread (including questions asked by students here in this thread). The purpose of this thread afterall, is to be a compilation of your (Chemguide7's) tips, suggestions and guidance to students from your perspective. Different students prefer different teaching styles, methodologies and pedagogies.

Do you know where to get the A level chemistry guide textbook by C.S toh (can't find it in popular bookstore)

This guide book is quite "old" already and contains barely enough information for current A level syllabus. But very good for test revision and consolidation. I do not know whether the author is trying to update the edition. Why not call up the company and ask whether they are preparing a new edition? If not, you can try to get it at Bras Basah Complex Popular or 2nd/3rd floors ma-ma Indian shops (at Bras Basah) or even second hand bookshops. The 2 books written by RJC lecturers are more comprehensive but deeper. The authors are Chan Kim Seng and Jeanne Tan. These books may also be out of stock at some Popular bookshops. Regards.

Planning to get a book that is published according to this years' syllabus 2013 for reference purposes. I guess I will look into the 2 books written by the RJC lecturers. What is the title of their books and where else can you find their books,since Popular is out of stock?

The titles are "Understanding Advanced Organic and Analytical Chemistry" and "Understanding Physical Inorganic Chemistry" by Jeanne Tan and Chan Kim Seng published by WS education. You may go to Bras Basah Popular and check the books out. Or call up Popular bookshop first to see which branch still has the books. If not, e-mail the publisher at [email protected] An alternative is to obtain the lecture notes from a top JC and a neighbourhood JC. The top JC will have a lot of extra information while a neighbourhood JC lecture notes may explain concepts in more understandable and basic fundamental ways. You can source from marketplaces around forums.

I didn't realise that Jc notes can be bought through the forums,is it available in bookstores? I will still get the books but will be getting the lecture notes as a bonus. I am applying for a neighbourhood JC right now,currently preparing study materials for a headstart

No. It is not available from bookstores. You may source around in Singapore forums. H2 Chemistry is tough in the A level exams. So be prepared!

I am prepared, learned to study smart for my A levels this year.Only problem is whether the teachers in my school are capable of helping me get A's for my Chem and also competition from RI and hwa chong students. So,am i looking at a forum sale of past-year Jc notes?

You have to be proactive and learn on your own too. Yes, look for forum sale of latest JC notes. All the best. Choose your subject combi and CCA carefully.

i will try to choose a CCA that does not take up a lot of time,to the extent,that it affects my studies. Independent learning is fine for me,i just need the right materials and teachers to excel further. Do I have to meet-up to get the JC notes?

I have done a brief analysis of 2012 Singapore Chem exam papers - Paper 3.

2012 Cambridge-Singapore Chem Papers are difficult, surprising but still doeable. Paper 3

1(a) Candidates need to illustrate the reaction of aluminium oxide with aqueous sodium hydroxide to form a complex. Candidates need to link the partial covalent character in the ionic bonds of aluminium oxide to the amphoteric character of aluminium oxide.

(b)(i) Candidates need to learn what are dative bonds in chemical bonding.
