TWO Pioneer Junior College classmates died within three weeks of one another by leaping from high-rise blocks of flats about a year ago, a coroner's court heard on Thursday.
Ho Yi Xin, 17, was described as a hard-working student with high expectations of herself. Her ambition was to be a doctor.
The second-year Pioneer Junior College student had been seeing a private psychiatrist since June last year as she was feeling anxious in school and at home. She had problems sleeping and could not concentrate on her studies.
Her last visit to the psychiatrist was on July 3 - the day she was found dead at the foot of Block 533 Jelapang Road in Bukit Panjang. She was believed to have fallen from the 24th storey of the block as her silver-coloured bag was found there.
At an inquiry into her death, the court heard that Yi Xin, an introvert, had confided in her classmate around May last year that she was depressed over a detention form given by her favourite teacher for being late.
Seventeen days later, her classmate, Wong Peek Yian, leapt to her death from her seventh-floor bedroom window at Jurong West Street 81. Peek Yian had found out that she had done badly in her mid-year examination and dreaded to see her vice-principal over her poor performance.
A few hours before her death leap, she had sent text messages to her boyfriend, full-time national serviceman Valentino Lee, 19, telling him that her teacher had advised her not to see him too often.
State Coroner Victor Yeo recorded a verdict of suicide on both deaths. He felt that their deaths were a sad coincidence and there was no evidence to suggest that Peek Yian was emboldened to follow Yi Xin in her footsteps.
Seems like more cases like this may follow suit though
what?!@? depressed over a freaking detention and mid year results?
why so myopic?!?! All these crap don't matter when u go out to work. Very sad.....kids think that results are all that matter.

Cannot really blame them, and results do matter, especially kids these days, scared china people snatch our place in universities, and without a university education = gone.
last time when i got 80 plus for maths instead of high 90s, i cried. now i look back, i wanna laugh my balls off man.

something is terribly wrong with the mental framework of our young generation. here in indonesia, it's so different. children don't study as hard because eventually they wanna expand their family's business or start their own when they grow up. I mean the chinese.

Even without education, You have to realize it is important to have networks.
Either way, If you choose not to have friends, work hard, and I believe 'networks' of friends/people will enable you to have a good life, even though you fail your O levels.

Agreed.
Phases of life....in school, no friend, ok no problem, just study hard and get good results. Working life, you will meet colleagues and army friends....
If result poor, can take night class, you will also be able to have mature friends over there.
So, dont be dishearten for those who feel life is meaningless without friends.

yeh life goes on. so many of my friends who entered my sec sch with shit psle grades are doing fine in life now. Some got worse grades than me but are now military officers, commercial pilots or senior engineers.
Post their pic.
Must be chio bu(s)
It's not that I want to mock the dead....
But come on lah... there are far greater challenges in life than detention (for being late) or messing up your June Common Tests (not even A Levels.... just Common Tests).
I get reminded of that JC kid who jumped a few years ago because his wiener wasn't big enough.... anyone remember this case?
Rest in peace
the title is misleading.
the suicides happened a year ago.
sg is now such a stressful place.

To be fair to the the other JC kid at least a small wiener is a better cause to jump than one detention at school and failing a common test.
Not that it makes any sense either.
