In my opinion it was a mistake to confront him. What did he expect would happen? He started a confrontation and got one. When you do something like this you don't know what the other person's reaction will be. If some guys having a really bad day and you end up being stabbed is it worth it?
In any bad situation the main priority should be to defuse the situation, there was nothing to be gained by stopping and confronting the jaywalker, especially when there's a client in the car.
