OH and by the way, cars are cheap in Melbourne. (as compared to Singapore)
How do you go about buying a new/old car here.?
because in singapore one need to consider COE+bank loan+road tax+car insurance+driver's license+parking+misc.
Is buying a car in Melbourne like easy.?
Dunno. I haven't come across this hurdle yet. I'll worry when I come to it!
I intend to pay for the full price of the car upfront though, when it's time for me to buy one (after I get my driving licence, which will be after I finish my entire course), so I guess I'll just have to deal with insurance, tax, and the petrol prices.
A must is an annual subscription to the Ambulance service here, just in case. Thing is, ambulance services can cost a bomb here, unlike in Singapore. Depending on what services you needed, the minimum cost I think is about A$3K!!!
I think Honeymouse and Gedanken are the ones who will be able to advice you re. car purchase.

Piece of cake. The cheapest car I bought was $1500, and that got me around a good three years as a student before I decided to trade up.
Pretty much the only things you'll need are a driver's licence and a Roadworthy Ceritifcate (RWC) for the car. The RWC is often supplied by the seller, although you can buy it, take it to a certified mechanic yourself and get the RWC before registering the car (however, this probably means that there will have to be some work done on the car to get it up to scratch, so a RWC from the seller is preferable). Note that the RWC is only good for 28 days from time of issue - any later than that and you'll have to get a new cert. The transfer fee of the car is 10% of the sale price IIRC, and then she's all yours.
If you know what you're doing, you can get a car real cheap. The $1500 car was just out of tune but the seller didn't have the knowhow to sort it out himself and he dropped the price because he thought it was busted. I wasn't about to make him any wiser - I bought the car, serviced it, tuned it and it went like the clappers.
huh.? why do ambulance service here cost a bomb.? Do you mean that they don't have that kind of singapore 995 emergency service.??
Anyway i checked with my friend that that vehicle insurance is based on the individual so if you're driving your friend's car and you're involved in an accident, you're liable for the damages.hmm..i don't really get that part so i guess in the future when i get a car i need some 'education'. haha..
EH and OH, someone got shot by a gunman right in front of her doorstep in Frankston. hmm.. am i afraid.? no..not yet..hahahaha..

Monthly bus ticket? I've only heard of monthly Metlink tickets, and those cost about A$105 for Zone 1 travel only. If travelling in Zones 1 and 2, it costs about A$160 for the monthly ticket. My colleagues were grumbling about the prices. You must be paying student concession fares.
And I wonder what you cook to keep your groceries bill down to just A$50 a month. Even when I shop at Victoria Street, which has really cheap vegetables, meat and seafood, I don't think it costs me A$50 or under a month! You're not a vegetarian, are you?
Which suburb do you live in? I'm guessing with rent that low, you must live at least half an hour away from the city, or you're sharing your premises, or you're living in a student hostel.

Dear rhonda, The above post i gave was to the new guy in melbourne, he may be a student
U must be buying raw meat , poultry and fish all the time which will of cos cost u more..And are u also cooking for yr family?
I can live on $50 - $60 per month as it is only for myself....my gf is in sydney currently due to work commitments...cos there is such cheap things as Canned food which are as good in nutritional value as the raw ones...
u can make great dishes with rice, potatoes, eggs, vegetables and canned meat if u are clever.
i always drive to city rather than take the train....but i keep my car for weekend travel to shops and city than drive everyday....I just need to buy 5 day per week metlink card and take public transport during weekdays ...
with rising petrol prices, u should be clever and balance yr stuff well.
Rhonda , this is my general eating habit
Morning - weetbix cereal with milk and Kiwi fruits
Lunch - rice with lean meat and vegetables with fruit juice
Dinner - bread with canned Tuna/ meat and potatoes and eggs with milk / fruit juice
as u can see my general eating habit is not really lacking in nutritional value as most of the stuff are cheap and good. plus they are stockable items which usually come in bulk
If you tell me frozen meat is as nutritious I agree but canned meat as nutritious??
Originally posted by elindra:If you tell me frozen meat is as nutritious I agree but canned meat as nutritious??
yes especially fish, research on the net...its been proven canned tuna and salmon is as good as the real stuff...
firstly in Aus, u dont sweat due to weather, unlike in SG u face humid weather, stress , pollution which will deprive your body of nurients and due to sweating
In Aus u dont really feel hungry often due to not sweating but u still need to eat on time... but the key is the type of food u eat..
if your diet has bread, rice and meat, vegetables...then its a good diet.

I'm talking about meat not fish
as for meat - buy the lamb and beef chops , they are cheap and can last u a week for just $9
as for fish - Buy the canned Tuna or salmon which will cost from 99 cents to $2.99
(if u are worried about the salt/oil content, buy the ones in sprinkwater)
as for bread - buy the homebrand bread as they are cheaper and u get more than in SG. Bread can be stored for months in the freezer
As for rice - u can buy cheap rice in asian suburbs like Springvale, Dandenong and Clayton
as for fruits and vege - dirt cheap as well in asian suburbs

That is tuna fish
Meat as in pork and stuff and canned pork and beef are so heavily processed it cannot be healthy at all with all the sodium added into it
yep but yr Qn was if canned meat is as good..so gave u the answer....
But for meat, u can always buy the fresh stuff....so why worry......

I did post that I was asking about meat (as in meat meat and not fish meat) coz usually ppl call fish flesh. fish and not meat
When you said canned meat was nutritious I was thinking in the lines of corned beef, luncheon meat, canned sausages etc
Anyway I'm not in Oz just wanted to clarify your canned meat is just as nutritious line

Hey man, I studied in the Peninsula Campus at Monash ! used to stay at the student hostel along 1A Bloom Street ! U staying in the student hostel or the houses along Bloom ?
Anyway try to becareful around in Frankston. During my studies there, I have seen drug addicts getting high in toliets and walking ard with needles sticking out of their arms.
Other than that, your heading into winter and i doubt you will be hitting the beach.. Do spend time go travel up to Mornington Peninsula to pluck straw berries and visit the jam factory.
As for shopping here, I think the bear and most of the folks have mentioned the whole works. However spend time at Chapel & Richmond if you want to buy fashion stuff or Smith Street for the gd old Nike & Addidas Warehouse stores !
As for food, go to Springvale and try the Pho there. It's heaven as compared to the thinly flavoured versions found in singapore.
i used up my stipend every month it was AU$1350 a month
that was in adelaide
expenditure includes rental of AU$540 a month of a 2-room flat whih i lived with I me and myself
I am staying in one of the houses along bloom street. The student hostels in 1A Bloom Street is pretty neat. So much better as compared to mine. lolx.
So much for the debate on canned stuffs and cheap groceries. Looks like one can survive on very little in Melbourne; just that you must compromise on certain things.
one-niner - thanks for the advice as i be heading down to Springvale and prolly Smith Street this weekend! oh i havent seen any druggies yet..haha..i have only visited the beach and its within walking distance from Frankston Station! =D
Melbournite - Ta-bao food from home in lunch boxes is a great way to save money too! You won't have to spend a single cent for the overpriced meals around Melbourne. Just cook double the normal portion from the pervious night's dinner and pack it into lunchboxes. Microwave it and its ready to go!

It gives me the impression you go to Monash Clayton Campus..... I used to live in Clayton too when I was a student at Monash. I so miss uni life! All you uni students, please enjoy your uni life as much as possible while you can.

thing is cook 2 days worth of rice and store it in the fridge...u can head over to food section and see my thread on recipes:

You are very frugal! Unfortunately, I love to eat well and I love variety in my meals so it's hard to save that way. I'm not a vegetarian, nor am I a huge fan of canned food, so I do buy fresh meat, poultry and seafood when I cook. Occasionally, I do resort to canned or frozen TV dinners, but I'd much prefer freshly-cooked food, or takeaways.
I'm on the same page with elindra with regards to canned meat products - they are all processed to hell. When I do eat canned food, I usually add fresh vegetables to it, but honestly, they may taste better, but it doesn't mean they are more nutritious nor more palatable.
Maybe it boils down to one thing - whether you eat to live, or live to eat. Being a Mod of Club 30, needless to say, I live to eat!

Not yet! It's hard to find friends here who love food. I'm still trying to find a kaki who'd love to go to Nobu or Fifteen with me.
I did hear from colleagues that their friends who went to Fifteen were a tad disappointed and they felt it was all hype.
I'm tightening my belt now, because I have huge bills to pay and I need to save a pretty large sum before I embark on my Deakin U course. So looks like Nobu will have to wait for a long while yet!
